Tournament held in honor of Officer Kevin Ambrose

Posted: Updated:

It's been almost four months since Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose was killed in the line of duty. On Friday friends, family and co-workers came out for a golf tournament held in his honor. The event raised money for three causes with ties to the family.

"It's unbelievable how many people have been supporting us throughout this whole thing throughout these past four months," said Ambrose's son Kyle. "It really has been truly unbelievable."

Hundreds of people including around 90 past and present Springfield police officers spent the day on the golf course for the tournament and they didn't let the rainy weather get in their way.

"We hope that it makes the Ambrose family realize how important Kevin was to everybody," said Springfield officer and event organizer, Joseph Gentile.

The tournament was hosted by the Springfield Patrolman's Union. The event raised money for the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Foundation, the Springfield Police Relief Association and the Amateur Baseball Club the Springfield Titans.

The 36-year-veteran officer was killed back in June while responding to a domestic dispute call. And today, everyone took some time to remember those unforgettable qualities about Ambrose.

"I didn't know him real well, he'd come on quite a bit before me," said Gentile. "But, I knew him the way that everybody did and that was if you saw him in the hall if you ever talked to him you knew he was a quality person."

"He was a really funny man and very caring," said Ambrose's daughter, Krista. "He loved his family, he loved all of us."

"He brought a smile to everybody even on their worst day and that was one thing that he could do was make everybody laugh," said Kyle.

Event organizers say that their goal is to raise $10,000 in honor of Ambrose.
