Money conference held at Holyoke Community College

Posted: Updated:

It was a packed house inside the Kitteredge Center at Holyoke Community College on Saturday morning.

A money conference was held for free, sponsored by the Massachusetts State Treasury and numerous vendors.

Attendees got to hear from several speakers and take part in break out sessions on topics that mattered most to them.

People at the event said it does not matter your financial status, there was something for everyone to learn.

"This is to remind us that we have a personal financial responsibility to control our personal finances, as well as resources available to us," said Leanne Martin Fay, financial education director for the Massachusetts State Treasury.

"I am hoping to get my financial situation in order," said Victoria Deibel, who has attended similar conferences before. "I have a new job, I am working with less money.  It costs three times as much to fill the gas tank as it used to. So I am just looking for options to make life better and maintain a standard of living."

Officials said the events used to be called Money Conferences for Women, but after the recession state Treasurer Steve Grossman decided to open up the conferences to everyone.
