Polls are mixed ahead of third Senate debate

Posted: Updated:

One day before Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren will face off against Sen. Scott Brown, new numbers are showing just how tight the race really is.

A new poll out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst finds Warren holds a narrow lead of 48 percent to 46 percent among likely voters.

But a different poll released today by WBUR and MassINC finds Brown in the lead 47 percent to 43 percent.

And, many voters say that they're looking forward to hearing what the candidates have to say tomorrow night to make up their minds.

"I just want to see what their thoughts are," said Feeding Hills resident Diane Sonsini.

Information collected from Western New England University and our media partners The Republican and Masslive finds that many voters' opinions might be changed by debates. Their data found that 3/5 of likely voters have seen or heard one of the debates between the two candidates. Among those 31 percent said one of the debates they saw or heard made them more likely to vote for Brown while 30 percent said the same for Warren.

Other data collected about the candidates has found that 64 percent of voters describe this race as very or somewhat negative.

"They started out both very well," said Springfield resident, Joseph Dowd. "But it is getting down to the end, and it is a tough race."

And even voters who have already made up their minds say tomorrow's debate could be a turning point for either candidate, depending on how it goes.

"Anybody can think that, 'oh, no problem, she's going to win or he's going to win' and all of a sudden, something else happens," said Agawam resident Douglas Clarke. "We'll just have to wait and see."

The debate at Symphony Hall is sold out, but CBS 3 Springfield will be broadcasting it live beginning at 7 p.m.
