Penn National Gaming unveils their casino proposal for Springfield

Posted: Updated:

Thursday Penn National Gaming revealed their plans for a proposed Hollywood-style casino in the city of Springfield's Northend.

The $807 million design located off of 1-91 would span more than 13 acres. The plan features 300,000 square feet of gaming including 3,000 to 3,500 slot machines. It also includes an up to 500 guestroom hotel and parking for more than 4000 vehicles.

The Pennsylvania-based company would relocate The Republican headquarters to a newly renovated downtown location and would move the Peter Pan bus station to Union Station.

They also intend to refurbish the historic Paramount Theater and house additional administrative offices in the building.

Residents learning of the plans today have mixed reviews.

"I think it's a really good thing," said Jarrell Mims.

"I don't think that's a good idea at all," said Marvin Carr.

Those in favor point to the added boost for the economy and the potential revitalization of the city.

"It will open more jobs, it will be more opportunity for us young folks," said Nina Barcomb. "I'm only 21 so it will open up a job for me."

But those not in favor say it would disrupt the neighborhood.

"It's congested enough down here every day, I go to school and I have problems getting in and out," said Carr.

Penn National Gaming is working in partnership with Peter Pickenelly, the chief executive officer of Peter Pan Bus Lines, on this project.

Pickenelly told CBS 3, "The $807 million project that we've unveiled today holds the potential to dramatically transform the economic future of our city. Not only will it create new jobs and additional tax revenue, it will serve as a catalyst for all sorts of additional development across the city."
