19-year-old Springfield man killed in shooting

Posted: Updated:

Eastern Avenue was closed off with crime scene tape Friday night as detectives scoured the area in front of Emily Market following the city's 10th murder.

"We were over here talking and all of a sudden we just heard about six or seven shots," said onlooker Henry Fickling.

Police said those shots hit a 19-year-old, the first teenager to be killed in the city this year.

It's a thought that doesn't sit well with people in the neighborhood.

"It's probably something senseless, something's that's not worth taking anybody's life or anything," Fickling said.

Witnesses said the teenager was in front of Emily Market when the shots were fired.

Police said people in an unknown car picked him up off the street, trying to get him to the hospital.

"People were yelling, trying to get him up off the ground and into the car," Fickling said.

They made it as far as Catharine Street, where they flagged down an ambulance.

The teen was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, but didn't survive.

"I am appalled at the amount of senseless shootings that are going on in our city," said resident Michael Jones.

It is the second murder in the city in less than a week. Police made an arrest in a drug-related murder earlier on Tuesday.

They said Friday night's killing is gang-related.

Last year at this time, the police had responded to their 18th murder. There would be 19 before 2011 ended.

Even though the death toll is lower this year, neighbors want this violence to stop.

"And that's what has us so concerned around here is how quickly these problems can escalate," Jones said.

Police have not made any arrests, but said they are following leads.
