Students reunite with soldier parents

Staff Sgt. Juanita Phillips and First Sgt. Eon Phillips with the United States Army surprised their two elementary school children Friday, during a Veterans Day assembly at Mary M. Walsh Elementary School in Springfield.

"My heart is overwhelmed and overjoyed right now," said Juanita.

The two sergeants have been stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana since 2009. They have not seen their children for six months.

"I'm very excited. I really can't put it into words," said Eon.

The couple has time off for the next three days and decided to surprise their kids, 7-year-old Trinity and 5-year-old Zion just in time for Veterans Day.

Juanita and Eon have been serving together in the military for 15 years. They've been stationed all over the world from Fort Lee Virginia to Germany to Iraq. The kids stay with their grandmother while their parents are away and Juanita says without all of her family's help she wouldn't be able to live the life she is now.

"If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be able to do what I love," said Juanita. "And, I do love serving in the military."

The Phillips will return back to Louisiana on Monday and expect to be deployed to Afghanistan in August.
