High performance computing center opens in Holyoke

Posted: Updated:

Three years and $165 million later, Holyoke's Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center opened Friday.

It's part of Holyoke's Innovation District and can house 10,000 high-end computers.

Five Massachusetts colleges helped develop the project: Boston University, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts.

The center will be used for research.

State and city officials say the opening of the center will be a catalyst to more development in Holyoke.

"We'll see all kinds of firms and jobs spawn from this investment here in Holyoke," said Gov. Deval Patrick.

"This has been a big project for the city. In a short amount of time it has been an economic driver in the city of Holyoke, it has helped us shape our image of a city that is really focused around in economy, art, innovation and technology," said Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse.

The project employed about 400 construction workers and took three years to complete.
