It may have taken a half but the Valdosta State Blazers got its act together and beat West Alabama 49-21 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. The Blazers came into the game after being off for almost a month.
West Alabama took a 14-0 lead before the Blazers battled back with back to back scores. One from Austin Scott on a 13 yard run and a pass from Cayden Cochran to Seantavious Jones from 15 yards out. The Blazers, however, missed both extra points and the score was 14-12.
West Alabama had a 21-12 lead at halftime but that's where the scoring would for the visitors. VSU scored 37 unanswered points including three Cedric O'neal touchdown runs and two from Austin Scott. 49-21 was the final. After the game quarterback Cayden Cochran reflected on what clicked for VSU at halftime.
"We gave them the ball with great position and they were scoring. They are a good team that's what they are going to do for us to be able to win the game we've got to make sure that we don't give them those types of opportunities and that's what we kind of stressed the most." Said Cochran
"I think a lot of it from our point was just the long lay off that we had. Not playing a game and the anticipation of finally getting into the playoffs and having an opportunity to be able to go back out onto the field. I think once we got into the flow of the game and we forgot about doing any of that other stuff like running our mouth and just played football, we were a totally different football team." Said VSU head coach David Dean.
Valdosta State, the Super Region 2 No. 1 seed, and Carson-Newman, the Region's No. 2 seed, will play next Saturday at Noon.
