Consultant to review dorm security at UMass Amherst

Posted: Updated:

The University of Massachusetts Amherst says it will hire an outside consultant to review security procedures at its residence halls.

The announcement comes a month after a resident student was allegedly raped by four Pittsfield teens who gained access to her dormitory. None of the teens are students at UMass. They are currently awaiting trial.

The consultant will be charged with auditing the security measures already in place at the 45 residence halls on campus. The consultant is also being asked to look over how public safety information is shared with students, staff and faculty, as well as take a closer look at inter-department communication between public safety, student affairs and operation of residence halls.

Campus police Chief John Horvath says a request for proposal has been finalized. Proposals will be due by Dec. 21 before being reviewed by a committee. Finalists will selected by Jan. 7, 2013. Horvath says a consultant should be selected sometime during the spring 2013 semester.
