Four Springfield families have new homes for the holidays

Posted: Updated:

Habitat for Humanity has helped four Springfield families, who lost their homes in the tornado, to have a new place just in time for the holidays.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Guerrero family was one of four families who hosted an open house to celebrate their new Leitch Street home.

During last year's June 1 tornado, their home was completely wiped out.

Not only that, but Juan Guerrero's wife was killed while trying to protect one of their daughters when the tornado hit.

This construction of homes is part of Habitat for Humanity's "Home for the holidays" campaign, which started in June.

One Habitat for Humanity worker said building a home for Guerrero and his daughters was one of her most rewarding experiences to date.

"I've built a lot of houses with Habitat, and this has been one of the best experiences I've had. Juan has been here almost every building we've had ... he's been at other houses for those build days ... he's all in it ... and he's been really amazing to work with ... and his daughters are great. I'm really excited to have played a part in helping them a really great new house," said Laura Browne, construction and volunteer coordinator at Habitat for Humanity.

"Having a house, or a place to call home during the holidays is very nice," said Guerrero, a new homeowner.

Habitat for Humanity representatives said they expect construction of the home to be completed by this week.
