Mayor Sarno responds to proposed meeting on Gaming Resort proposals

Posted: Updated:

On Tuesday, Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse sent invitations to all area mayors and town managers, to be part of the discussion on the impact of a Gaming Licensed Resort in Western Massachusetts.

According to a representative from Morse's office, the Holyoke mayor is committed to ensuring that the entire region has a say on the proposed project because it will likely extend beyond the borders of the specific community chosen.

On Thursday, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno responded to the invite.

Sarno, similar to Morse, believes that regional cooperation of a project this size is extremely important.

However, based on the Jan. 3 deadline for proposals, the Springfield mayor believes that the proposed meeting by Morse will lack accurate evidence because no developer has been chosen for the project.

Until the city of Springfield has chosen specific developers and gone through the approval process from City Council, voters and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, as required by the Gaming Act, will it then begin a conversation about the overall impact for the surrounding communities.
