Southwick officials discuss safety precautions following Newtown shooting

Posted: Updated:

Like many other schools systems across the country the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District is taking a second look at their safety procedures after Friday's tragedy in Newtown.

"I think all schools are concerned about student safety and that is true every day not just when a tragedy happens," said Superintendent John Barry. "So, we are aware, and we are vigilant and it is going to stay that way."

In an effort to tighten up their emergency procedures police checked up on all the schools in the district yesterday.

"We did a walkthrough of the schools to see if they are meeting their criteria for their emergency response plans. They're doing a very good job, we've found a couple of weak areas and made recommendations on how to tighten up those," said Southwick Police Chief Mark Krynicki.

Officials say that emergency response plan has been in place in the district for around a year and a half.

Now in addition to emergency procedures, Southwick also has a high tech system in place. In 2007, a local family gave the school a $42,000 grant to update their security systems. For safety reasons we're not going to share too many specifics of the plan, but police do tell CBS 3 there are many important advantages to the system.

"They've got video monitoring their grounds and the building, and we actually can connect to their videos here at the police department so we can actually see what is happening in the schools if an incident is taking place," said Krynicki.

Southwick does have a big project coming up to renovate several schools and Barry says that updated security and technology will be implemented into those plans.
