Snow welcome news for skiing business

Posted: Updated:

The heavy dose of snow that hit Western Mass on Wednesday night was welcome news for skiers, snowboarders and everyone at the Blandford Ski Area.

"This is so super exciting. We waited a long time for this and we deserve it," said Lisa Mascidrelli, director of the kids program at Blandford Ski Area.

Inches of white powder continued to fall at the slopes Thursday.

Folks at Blandford say they're anticipating around a foot of snow. It's welcome weather after a virtually snowless winter last year.

"Last year was a tough year. The skiing that we had up here was great. The man-made snow was wonderful to ski on, but we're on limited terrain," Mascidrelli said.

Snow making machines line the hills, but real powder is something only Mother Nature can bring.

"Once it's in your back yard and you see all this, it's spirits everyone up here to enjoy the weather," Mascidrelli said.

The weather also uplifted those skiers who were less than satisfied with last year's snowfall.

"We've been waiting all winter long to get up here, and finally today we got some snow so we're going to be skiing for the next couple days," said Ryan Williams from South Hadley.

Families like the Plasses make snowboarding a tradition. The fresh powder brought them out Thursday.

"It was great to get out here, first day of the season having fresh powder, wonderful conditions. The girls had a blast," said Krista Plasse from Conway.

Workers at Blandford and skiers hope that all this snow on just the second day of the season is a sign of more winter weather to come.

"They come back year after year and have such a good time," Mascidrelli said.

"We'll be praying to the snow gods for more powder, " said Brian Williams from Washington D.C.
