Amherst police hires new officer

Posted: Updated:

The Amherst Police Department has hired a new police officer. Greenfield resident Michael Barone has been appointed to the force after an extensive selection process.

Barone, who is a Chicopee native, graduated from Westfield State University in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

In 2012, he graduated from the Plymouth Police Academy, where he was employed as a police officer for the Provincetown Police Department.

His position is being funded by the Department of Justice's Violence Against Women Act grant that the town received last year.
