Wounded warrior from Granby received new home

Posted: Updated:

It was an event nearly nine months in the making.

Saturday, after lots of hard work and plenty of man-hours, a wounded warrior, Sgt. Josh Bouchard, received his new home.

Hundreds of volunteers, family, friends and veterans lined the driveway, welcoming home Bouchard. The Marine lost part of his left leg while in Afghanistan and spent over 300 days in various hospitals recuperating.

For Bouchard, the day was emotional on many levels.

"People really do care," said Bouchard. "When I was tied up and locked in the hospital I did not think anyone cared. I did not care. It is organizations and outreaches like this that really show the humanity in America."

The finished product is the 125th home built by Homes for Our Troops. The organization said 70 percent of the money raised for the home came from private citizens.

For the Bouchard family, the house which is wheelchair friendly, will give Josh the freedom he needs. His father said Saturday was a day they could not dream about when his son's injuries occurred.

"His spirits seem to be uplifted," said James J. Bouchard. "When [Josh] first was home, he was very down and depressed. I can understand that with what they talked about. We have carpeting that slowed him down. He would run into the doors all the time. Just a lot of difficulty."

Josh said he takes pride in the fact that things from here on out will be a little less difficult.

"Now that it is all done, it is a feeling of accomplishment," said Bouchard.

The house, which began construction back in April, took a little longer than usual to complete.

Homes for Our Troops said that was due to contractors needing to schedule their volunteer time to get the job done while also holding full-time jobs.

Josh plans on being moved in by the end of the weekend.
