Former Putnam Vocational employee pleads not guilty

Posted: Updated:

A former Putnam Vocational Technical Academy employee accused of stealing thousands from the school plead not guilty to the charge of larceny by scheme of more than $250 Friday morning.

Ann Berry is the second former Putnam Vocational employee to face a judge for allegedly stealing from the school, though the two schemes are thought to be separate.

An investigation by the Springfield Office of Internal Audits and the attorney general's office found that Berry, a former teacher and advisor who ran the school store, would allegedly buy items for the store using her own money and then deposit the profits into her personal account. Berry is accused of defrauding the school for more than $16,000.

Berry's scheme was one of two uncovered by that investigation. Last week, Sherry Suber pleaded not guilty to the charge against her. Investigators allege Suber used her position as a senior clerk typist to steal more than $14,000 from the school.

Both women are due back in court next month.
