More than a half-dozen weapons seized from Springfield home

More than a half-dozen illegal guns and more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition are now off the streets in Springfield.

Last night police arrested Timothy Oswald and Akeem Castro after police in the city's narcotics division received information that high-powered illegal assault weapons were in Oswald's home.

"Among those weapons was an AK-47, shotguns, semi-automatic handguns, things that are really dangerous if they got into the wrong hands," said Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police had been investigating the claim for around a month.

"Through their investigation they obtained a search warrant for the place and when they were about to hit it, the target of the investigation left with another subject and they figured it was a safe time to pull them over, put them under arrest - they got a gun out of the car," said Delaney.

A total of eight guns were taken from the residence.

"Not really too sure what he was going to do with the weapons but if he was going to sell those on the street that'd be bad news for people," said Delaney.

The man with Oswald at the time of the arrest was 20-year-old Akeem Castro. He had a gun in his possession and was charged with carrying a firearm without a license and possessing ammunition. Thursday, both men appeared in court together pleading not guilty to the charges against them.

Castro's defense attorney asked the judge to consider a lower bail than was suggested by the commonwealth stating that his client was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Oswald's attorney fought that his client should be given a chance to prove himself.

The judge set bail higher than what the commonwealth had asked for. Bail was set at $1 million for Oswald and $250,000 for Castro. Both men are due back in court on Feb. 20.
