Dates set for special Senate election

Posted: Updated:

A date has been set for the special election to fill U.S. Sen. John Kerry's seat.

Kerry is expected to be confirmed by the Senate as the next Secretary of State on Tuesday.

A primary will be held here in the Baystate on April 30 with a general election set for June 25.

Candidates will have four weeks to collect the 10,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot. Democratic Rep. Edward Markey says he wants the seat.

Fellow Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch is also considering a run, while former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is considering running on the Republican ticket.

Markey is challenging both Democratic and Republican candidates to agree to keep outside groups from spending money on political ads.

He says he wants a deal similar to the so called "peoples pledge" that was agreed to by Brown and Sen. Elizabeth Warren in last year's senate race.

Meantime, the governor is expected to announce a temporary interim senator on Wednesday.
