INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -
A Chinese food delivery man was badly beaten on Jan. 11 and three people have been charged in the assault.
Jordan Cheng is finally awake and his father talked about his long road to recovery.
Four weeks ago, Cheng wasn't expected to live. He was severely beaten while delivering food from his job at Mandarin House restaurant.
The house on South Hall Street turned out to be vacant. Police said three suspects, now charged, tried to rob him and left him lying in a pool of blood.
"I don't know, you don't have to beat him, just get the money," Danny Cheng, Jordan's father, said.
The suspects beat Jordan Cheng in the head with a baseball bat. He underwent extensive brain surgery. Doctors removed part of his skull to allow the swelling to go down. They told his father Jordan Cheng may not survive.
Danny Cheng said doctors told him his son is doing very well, but he has a long road of recovery ahead and won't be going home soon.
Jordan is doing much better and his curiosity in KCTV5's news cameras can attest to that. He spent some time pushing buttons on the news camera and even looked closely into the lens and gave a big smile.
And while he may never regain his full mental capacity, he knows he's alive.
"Every day, I meet many angels who protect me," Jordan Cheng said in a soft whisper. "I (am) so lucky. Doctors, many nurses save my life - change my life."
If you'd like to help Jordan Cheng and his father, a fund has been set up.
