Truck drivers face rough winter travel this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Time is running out to get ready for this storm. A lot of people spent the night stocking up.

But others will have to face this storm head-on.

"I've been doing this since 2003 and let me tell you this is the worst weather I've seen since I've been up here," said truck driver Ronald Vogel of Troy, NH.

He's not waiting for the predicted 12-18 inches of snow to fall before he gets on the road Friday.

"I'll be leaving here in about two hours," Vogel said.

Dozens of trucks were parked at the 50's-style diner off Interstate 291.

Some drivers agree with Vogel that it's better to be safe than sorry.

Chris Kelly of Joliet, IL is staying put.

"It just doesn't seem worth it. The appointment that I have to deliver tomorrow is at 10 o'clock. The storm's supposed to be rolling in tomorrow morning so I just figured play it safe," he said.

The storm is predicted to drop heavy snow across Western Massachusetts.

And MEMA alerted the public that they will be fully activated Friday.

The National Weather Service is predicting that travel may even become nearly impossible, with snow drifts blowing across roadways.

"If it is unsafe, then I'm pulling it over, my life is not worth this load," Vogel said.

But not everyone is staying put.

Twelve-year veteran driver Brian Michener is headed back to Seattle, WA, snow or not.

"It's part of the job, it's got to be done," he said.

And whether they're drivers of an 18-wheeler or a four-wheeler, Thursday night, drivers were advised to gas up, check out their vehicles but mostly stay off the roads come Friday afternoon.

"Stay home, get off the road, think of safety," Vogel said.
