They have served Massachusetts job seekers for more than 40 years, but by this fall the Massachusetts Career Development Institute, Inc. of Hampden County will be shutting its doors.
MCDI says it will transition its remaining programs to other regional providers and close for good by this September. The organization cited state and Federal funding cuts, coupled with the availability of similar training programs, as reasons for shutting down.
MCDI says students currently enrolled in their programs will be able to complete those programs. English for Speakers of Other Languages programs will continue through MCDI's planned closure on Sept. 1.
"The good news is that no one in our community will be without the services as our core programming, such as nurses aide training, is available in the community college system or the vocational education system," said MCDI Executive Director Timothy Sneed.
Sneed says 29 staff members will lose their jobs.
MCDI had a budget of $2.7 million in 2012. Seventy percent of that funding came from Federal and state sources.
