Hebron superintendent accused of spending spree

Posted: Updated:

The former superintendent of schools for Hebron is accused of spending thousands of dollars on herself before resigning from the district and moving on to another one.

Eleanor Cruz was well-liked in town and her resignation after seven years with that district didn't raise any red flags. It was only after she left when they noticed something wasn't right.

Cruz, who is the current superintendent for Plymouth, is accused of spending $15,000 on items at Nordstorm Rack, Wegmans, supermarkets and online stores.

The board of education noticed the purchases when they went through her credit card statements.

In a 300-page document during their month-long investigation, board members determined that Cruz visited Ted's in downtown Hebron, where she allegedly spent $960. She also reportedly spent $1,400 on landscaping to have her lawn maintained.

"It saddens me actually because there are a lot of great people in this town and they don't deserve that," said Hebron parent Trish Malitsky.

When Eyewitness News contacted Plymouth Mayor Vincent Festa Jr., he said that it was the first time that he had heard about the allegations and needed to review the facts from the investigation from Hebron.

Festa said he is planning to talk with Cruz Monday.

Calls to Cruz were not returned.

One part of the investigation is still ongoing, but in the meantime, Hebron has asked Cruz to repay them. They still haven't decided if they'll seek to prosecute.

Hebron taxpayers have this advice for Plymouth.

"Get rid of her while you can," Malitsky said.
