Kelso police responding to reports of a disturbance early Sunday morning said they found a naked woman holding a baby in one hand and a hammer in the other.
Officers were called out to Division Street and Ross Avenue at 12:15 a.m. Investigators said a naked woman was on the ground screaming and ran into a home on Bowmont Street when a man tried to give her a blanket.
When officers knocked on the door, they said the naked woman answered. The woman is then accused of swinging the hammer, with a 4-month-old baby in her other arm, while shouting "Leave here" and "Jesus" at police.
The baby was also not wearing any clothes, according to police.
Investigators said the woman then got into a car. Officers were able to restrain her in the driver's seat and get control of the child.
Police said grandparents took the baby and her 6-year-old sister.
The unidentified 27-year-old woman was taken to the hospital. Police said her family believes she may have been taking a drug called Kratom. While legal, officers said it can cause hallucinations.
The DEA has placed it on its list of "drugs and chemicals of concern." The woman's father told Fox 12 she admitted drinking a cup of Kratom tea at some point before she became hysterical.
A police report said the woman was also high on marijuana. She told officers she believed the pot was laced with a toxin.
A PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center spokesperson said last year the number of cases at the hospital involving Kratom was basically non-existent. In the last few months, however, a handful of people have gone to the emergency department hysterical and screaming after using it.
The investigation is continuing.
