Springfield school safety committee meets for first time

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield's special committee on school safety met for the first time Wednesday.

The panel, made up of city councilors, parents and law enforcement will take a look at school safety procedures throughout the city.

The creation of the committee comes in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, CT, that left 20 students and six adults dead.

The school safety committee met at City Hall to begin discussions about the current safety practices at the schools, including protocol for drills in case of an intruder.

But it goes beyond school shootings. The committee also plans to address issues like domestic problems and gang violence.

John Nettis, the committee chairman and lieutenant with the Hampden County Sheriff's Department, says he has a personal connection to keep the schools safe.

"I have two children, my wife is a teacher ... my grandchildren would be going to Springfield public schools, so I definitely want to set the table for the future, for not only the future of my family but the future of Springfield schools," Nettis said.

Committee members also want to start inviting officers who are stationed at schools into the meetings for their input.

The committee will eventually make recommendations to the city council, school committee and the mayor.
