Charter school parents move forward with plans for new school

Posted: Updated:

Parents of the New Leadership Charter School continue to move forward with plans for a new innovation school.

Many of the parents and students gathered Saturday afternoon to discuss where things stand in the process.

Last month, parents delivered a prospectus to the city's school committee for the proposed Springfield Leadership Academy.

Last week, they attended the committee's meeting, and they believe the new school will happen.

"Technically we got a 'Yes, let's move forward,' because they did not say no," said Anita Tirkot, whose daughter is a student at the charter school. "So that is a positive thing. That is how we are taking it. The only thing that most of us did not like what came out of that meeting is that they keep wanting to talk about the past, and we are all about the future."

Parents hope to have official approval before school starts in the fall.

Back in January, school leaders announced they were following state recommendations and they would not be renewing the school's charter.
