Bark for Life organizers prepare for 2013 event

Posted: Updated:

It may only be March, but the planning has already begun for the annual Bark for Life event.

Saturday, members of the American Cancer Society held a kick-off event, where they helped to teach others how to raise funds.

Organizers hope to raise $60,000 this year, which is the same amount they raised in the past three years combined.

They told CBS 3 that the event has one big difference compared to Relay for Life.

"A person going through cancer cannot have their dog [in Relay for Life], so they did this four-hour event instead of a 24-hour event," said James Stuart, the event chairperson. "It allows them to bring their dog or companion, because with someone going through the illness, it is one of the most vital people to help them through their days."

Bark for Life is set for May 4, at Stanley Park in Westfield.

CBS 3 Springfield is proud to be a sponsor of this year's event.
