2 men dead after shooting in Hartford's north end

Posted: Updated:

A brazen, broad daylight shooting in Hartford left two men dead Monday, and police are still looking for the shooter.

The gunfire erupted Monday afternoon in Hartford's North End, not too far from an elementary school.

According to police, they received a call reporting shots fired just after 5 p.m. When they arrived in the area of Clark and Nelson streets, they said they discovered a crime scene that stretched for a number of blocks.

Omar Vaughn said he heard the gunfire and immediately picked up his phone to check on his son.

"I had to call my son to see if he was straight," he said. "Sometimes he's in this area."

According to Hartford police, the two men were found outside two houses on Clark Street and were rushed by private vehicle to Saint Francis Hospital.

Kwante Feliciano, 19, of Clark Street, was shot in the torso and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Kelly Cooper, 30, of Westland Street, was shot in the head and died Tuesday afternoon.

Feliciano's grandmother, Betty Crockett, told Eyewitness News that she was worried about him Monday night.

"I was looking for him to come home," she said. "I was kinda worried and that's why I came out."

Police said they don't think this was a random act of violence and they are still looking for the shooter.

Crockett told Eyewitness News that she believes her grandson, who was attending Lincoln Tech, was an innocent by stander.

"He didn't hang outside a lot," she said.

The shooter was described by witnesses as a Hispanic male who is 5'6" tall, weighs about 180 pounds and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Even though the incident was near Clark Elementary School, officials told Eyewitness News that they didn't add an extra security Tuesday or alter any bus routes.

Earlier this month, Sawrie Krichindath, 59, was found dead in her apartment, marking the city's first homicide of the year.

After the initial investigation, police arrested 52-year-old Robert White, who was Krichindath's boyfriend, and he was charged with murder.

Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to call 860-757-4463 or the tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477) or Crimestoppers at 860-722-4277. All tips will be kept confidential.
