Springfield's 2013 road improvement program to begin next week

Posted: Updated:

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno announced the start of the city's 2013 road improvement program on Thursday.

"We'll start with about $2 million worth of infrastructure repairs and repaving and resurfacing that is going to be done across the city," said Sarno."It's important to address your infrastructure because many a times with successive years of budget cuts infrastructure goes by the wayside."

On Monday crews will begin working on three different project areas.

The first will be the Allen Street and BiCentennial Highway project, which involves roadway reconstruction and intersection improvements. Several changes are set to be made to the area including traffic signal improvements and new left turn lanes.

The second project will take place here in Indian Orchard on Main and Front Street.

And, last on the agenda to begin next week is work to Tiffany Street, which will be milled and paved.

Then, on April 8, crews are expected to begin working on reconstruction to Spring, Elliot and Edwards streets. These roadways and sidewalks around the newly built data center will be repaired and new street lights will be one of the many changes in store for the neighborhood.

More than $1,500,000 in funding was secured for that reconstruction by Congressman Richard Neal.

Residents say that they are looking forward to the changes that are coming to their neighborhoods.

"Anytime you can get nice, new roads and get rid of the pot holes or anything like that it is always a good thing," said Elliot Street resident Rob Germain.

And, Sarno says he will continue to push for money to make more improvements across the city.
