Blood drive held in support of Chicopee teen

Posted: Updated:

There was a huge turnout at a blood drive Saturday, all to support a high school senior from Chicopee.

Austin Harrington suffers from a potentially fatal blood disorder.

Kristel Chouinard, Harrington's mother, said in October that her son's immune system completely shut down.

Now Austin has to go through an injection treatment once a week for the rest of his life, in order to keep his immune system going.

The event was an effort to say thank you to all of the blood donors who have helped Harrington along the way.

"One person's donation is not what he needs," said Chouinard. "He needs one little part from 1,000 people. So everyday strangers, every pint of blood can save up to three whole lives."

More than 150 people were expected to donate blood Saturday.

Chouinard said she hopes to make the blood drive a semi-annual event.
