Family's dog euthanized after brutally biting their 8-year-old son in Westfield

Posted: Updated:

An 8-year-old boy almost lost his arm after his family's dog attacked him in Westfield.

Animal control says the boy got his arm caught in a fence at his home on Day Avenue Tuesday night.

According to animal control, the bull dog attacked him and hit a major artery.

The boy underwent surgery at Baystate Medical Center and can now move his fingers.

The father took the dog to be euthanized and tested for rabies, which is standard procedure.

The boy's father released a statement to CBS 3 Springfield that read in part:

"First and foremost we would like to thank all the people who have sent their thoughts and prayers from our local community and from around the nation.

"This incident was an unfortunate accident and if it wasn't for my 13-year-old son and his longtime neighborhood friend, my 8-year-old would be much worse off today. Those teenage boys saved him and they are my heroes. Thank you boys.

"We are dog lovers and had this dog since he was 8 weeks old, and through his 3.5 years he never bit anyone nor showed aggression. We loved him. He loved my children but he made an awful mistake. We agree with the law, which is a good law, and it broke our hearts as we put the dog to sleep the next day.

"All we ask is that people don't judge us, but instead pray with us. Please pray for my son and for all the sick and injured children around the world."
