Springfield ranked among nation's worst cities for allergy sufferers

The city of Springfield has been ranked as America's 18th worst city for spring allergy sufferers.

A new study from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation found that Springfield-area residents are in for a tough allergy season due to an unusually wet winter. The severity of allergies this year helped the region's ranking climb from 28th in 2012 to 18th in 2013.

The rankings are based on pollen levels, use of allergy medicine, and the number of allergy specialists in the area, according to a foundation statement.

"Severe weather patterns can bring higher temperatures, higher pollen levels and increased exposure to mold, resulting in spring allergies that can peak stronger and last longer," said Dr. Bill Berger, a California allergist.

The top 10 worst cities for spring allergies are:

1. Jackson, MS

2. Knoxville, TN

3. Chattanooga, TN

4. McAllen, TX

5. Louisville, KY

6. Wichita, KS

7. Dayton, OH

8. Memphis, TN

9. Oklahoma City, OK

10. Baton Rouge, LA

Residents in the Springfield area won't be alone in suffering worse than normal allergies. The foundation found that residents of Buffalo, NY and Grand Rapids, MI may face more severe cases than they have in years past.
