A trooper was shot while pursuing two robbery suspects Monday afternoon and one of those suspects died.
Just before 3 p.m., officers were called to an armed robbery at the Days Inn on Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook.
Officers from Old Saybrook engaged a vehicle with the two suspects inside in a pursuit on Route 153, which also is known as Essex Road, in Westbrook. The two were wanted in connection with a robbery.
The vehicle crashed into a police cruiser on Route 153 in the area of Docs Hill Road.
Shots were fired between a trooper and the two suspects, according to police.
The state trooper, whose name was not released, was taken by a fellow trooper to Middlesex Shoreline Medical Center in Essex for non-life-threatening injuries.
"We're hoping for a full recovery in a speedy time frame, though his injuries are very severe at this time," said state police Sgt. Donna Tadiello.
The trooper's family has been contacted.
One of the suspects died, however, it is unclear if he was injured during the crash or shot by a trooper.
The other suspect, who was also injured, was airlifted to Hartford Hospital, police said.
Police have not released the names of the suspects at this time.
Route 153 was closed between Cross Street and Docs Hill Road while troopers cleared the crash and performed their investigation.
No schools in the area were in lockdown during the incident.
