New meat labeling system coming to grocery store near you

Going to the grocery store can be a little confusing, especially when you're shopping in the meat department.
There are roughly 350 different cuts of beef or pork to choose from.
Starting this summer, a new meat-labeling system looks to cut through the confusion by creating more consumer-friendly names for cuts of meat.
Beef shoulder top blade steak will become flat iron steak.
Pork loin top loin chop will become porterhouse chop.
Pork loin rib chop will become a rib eye chop.
Tom Buttes is the meat director for Basha's grocery stores.
He said that the new labeling system was put together through years of consumer research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Pork Board and Beef Check-Off Program.
"Our terminology is going to change to mirror more of what's used in restaurants," Buttes said. "It will make it easier for customers to understand what they're buying when they go down meat aisle."
Daniel Ortiz of Tempe said anything that can help shoppers be more informed is worth doing.
"I think its a good idea," sad Ortiz said. "There are so many cuts. It would be good to simplify the names."
The new meat-labeling system is set to start up this summer and will include tips about the ways to cook a particular cut of pork or beef.
