Springfield sends prayers to victims in Boston

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield is remembering the victims in the Boston Marathon attack and sent prayers to all of those affected Tuesday night.

Residents came out to the Foster Memorial Church on Wilbraham Road in Springfield just to have a place to pray with others.

Victims and first responders were on the minds of those at Foster Memorial church. "We can be first responders, and that's critical, but then who prays for the first responders," said Robin Withers, of Springfield.

Candles were lit and everyone got to say their own prayer for anyone they know was affected. "Let us pray for the victims, pray for our first responders, our elected officials," said one speaker at the vigil.

Mayor Domenic Sarno sat and prayed with residents and on his mind was 8-year-old Martin Richard. "In my eyes, you can see that young man, Martin Richard. He was 8 years old, and is now up in heaven," said Sarno.

Sarno also said bringing the community together will help them heal. "It's good that people come together as one in the house of prayer. It helps them better to understand the situation and move forward," said Sarno.

"We just keep going on and hope for the best, and keep praying," said Withers.

On Tuesday, Sarno reached out to both Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to send his condolences and offered any help to the city of Boston.
