State Rep. Puppolo proposes 'Boston Strong' license plate

Posted: Updated:

Friday morning, State Rep. Angelo Puppolo submitted legislation intended to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

It would come in the form of a "Boston Strong" license plate.

Puppolo told CBS 3 that the majority of specialty plates go for $40 above the price of a standard license plate.

In the legislation he submitted, he is initially asking for $50 to go to One Fund Boston.

"The license plate will show that kind of affection and affiliation," said Puppolo. "It will keep awareness around, not only financially, but to be able to remember and never forget what happened."

Like any other piece of legislation, Puppolo said there is plenty of work to do before it arrives on the governor's desk to become law.

"We are going to try to expedite it so we can get the funding to the families and the fund as fast as we can," Puppolo stated. "But, I anticipate there is going to be widespread support."

As the city of Boston continues to pick itself up from the bombings, Puppolo believes a license plate is the next step in honoring the victims.

"The fees above and beyond the registration go directly to those organizations to help do what they do," said Puppolo. "So, I just thought it was a natural progression, in terms of what happened, to be able to continue the financial support."

The design of the plate will be left up to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. While it may have a similar look to other organizations that currently produce specialty plates, Puppolo said it will have the slogan "Boston Strong".

"We have seen a number of great logos to come out of this already," said Puppolo. "We may take one of those, maybe just the One Fund ribbon. Or maybe we will create our own, something unique, something different."

Puppolo also said the legislation instructs the RMV to give one plate for free to a victim from the bombing or their family.
