Abundance of brush fires battled in Western Mass

Posted: Updated:

There has been an abundance of brush fires recently throughout Western Mass. Sunday alone, three big ones were reported in Monson, Belchertown and Holyoke.

Lt. Thomas Paquin of the Holyoke Fire Department told CBS 3 explained to CBS 3 how difficult battling some of the fires can be for local departments.

"We had over 100 people working on that fire Sunday between all the local communities and the department of fire services," said Paquin.

It took firefighters more than six hours to extinguish the brush fire in Holyoke on Sunday. Paquin says it seems there have been more brush fires this year so far than usual in the city.

"It's taxing. Especially in that area having no water resource as in Sunday's fire several communities have to come in and shuttle water back and forth," said Paquin.

Holyoke was just one of many communities to battle brush fires this weekend. Over in Monson crews spent much of their day battling flames as well.

"We had a brush fire approximately 12 acres in size it was a burning permit that did get out of control. The wind just took it out into the woods on him. We ended up having eight other towns in to help battle it," said Monson Deputy Fire Chief, Brian Harris.

And with the weather continuing to remain prime for these types of fires officials are asking the public to take extra precautions.

"If they're burning brush at their house they can keep it small have a garden house close by. One big thing we recommend is to keep any shrubs and any loose material at least 3 feet away from the house and that would help prevent a fire from spreading towards their house," said Harris.

And fire officials want to remind people to be extra careful when disposing of cigarettes, as they can easily ignite brush fires this time of year.
