Police responded to calls of a man shot at about 1 p.m. on Sunday in the area of 16 Cabot St.
Lt. Matthew Moriarty told CBS 3 that when officers arrived on scene, they found a man who had been shot several times.
The victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Police believe the victim was the intended target and the incident was not a random shooting.
They also believe this shooting is not connected with the murder of Daniel Rodriguez, which happened this past Tuesday in the area of Beech and Hampden Streets. That was the first homicide in the city in more than 20 months.
Police are not releasing the identity of the victim until next of kin has been notified.
The Holyoke Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Massachusetts State Police CPAC Unit are investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the investigation bureau at 413-322-6900 or use text-a-tip at 413-533-8477.
