Good news for Springfield School budget

Posted: Updated:

School committee members met Friday night to discuss the $437.5 million budget for fiscal year 2014.

District leaders surveyed parents, students and staff to craft their fiscal year 2014 budget.

"More resources to the school, there's more teachers in the budget, para-professionals, books, supplies, everything the public gave us as information saying that was there priority," said Springfrield Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Warwick.

The budget has no employee layoffs and actually adds teachers. District officials say the more than $3 million in state aid alone will allow them to keep crucial programs.

"We've funded the programs that are working the best and eliminated the programs that aren't working as well and looking for efficiencies," Warwick said.

One of the main goals with a strong budget is to boost the graduation rate in 2014 to 64.7 percent up from 56.6 percent in 2012.

"That gets to all facets of education and after school programs and athletics, which is important," said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

The $430 million budget will be split up across those areas and more including:

  • $3 million invested on retaining elementary academic intervention teachers
  • $1.4 million on building improvements and infrastructure
  • $175k for safety and security upgrades

Warwick says not having to worry about the money makes it easier to focus on the well-being of the students.

"Very happy with where we're at, it's a very strong budget for our school system to move forward."

The committee will vote on the final budget next Thursday. At that time the budget will be open for the public to view.

Warwick says he believes it will pass.
