DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz visits Western MA

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Just over two weeks remain before Massachusetts holds a special election to decide its next U.S. Senator.

It will either be Democrat Ed Markey or Republican Gabriel Gomez.

It is a race that has the country's attention.

The chair of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was in the Pioneer Valley on Sunday stumping for Markey.

The Schultz said the party does not want a repeat of the 2010 special election, where Republican Scott Brown overcame double-digit polling deficits to beat Democrat Martha Coakley.

She said that is the reason big names in the party, such as herself and President Barack Obama, are visiting the Bay State this week.

"On my watch, as chair of the DNC, I want to make sure we do not take anything for granted," said Wasserman Schultz. "It is a special election, it is a short window of time. We want to make sure that everyone across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts understands what is at stake in this election."

Markey and Gomez will debate this coming Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Springfield.

People will be able to watch it on CBS3Springfield.com, as well as the cable channel CBS 3 Now.

That channel is on Comcast 293, Charter 230 and digital channel 3.6.
