Springfield police recruits help out the community

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A group of recruits from the Springfield Police Department spent the day Monday doing community outreach.

The recruits read to students at a local school in the morning and spent their afternoon helping to fix up the Head Start location on Madison Avenue.

The community outreach is a part of the learning process required as part of the recruits' training.

"It feels good because you're getting to help out the community that we are going to be working in. As becoming police officers it's a good feeling knowing that you are helping the people out," said Springfield police recruit Lawrence Mayo.

The recruits are expected to graduate from the police academy in September.
