NFL's Aaron Hernandez charged with murder

NORTH ATTENBOROUGH, MA (WHDH/CNN) - Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd.

The Patriots released Hernandez shortly after police took him into custody Wednesday, according to the team's official Twitter.

Hernandez was taken away in handcuffs from his Massachusetts home by police hours before the team's announcement. Authorities put the former New England tight end into a police cruiser.

The New England Patriots released the following statement:

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

It was not clear if Hernandez is charged with anything.

Authorities have been investigating the shooting death of Odin Lloyd, 27.

His body was found less than a mile from Hernandez's home in North Attenborough, MA.

Police searched Hernandez home twice as part of the investigation. An arrest warrant was pending against Hernandez for obstruction of justice, according to multiple reports.

The tight end caught 51 passes for 483 yards and five touchdowns in 2012, his third season with the Patriots.
