Ludlow firefighters suspect arson in overnight fire

Posted: Updated:
LUDLOW, MA (WSHM) -

Firefighters were called to the scene of a massive fire on 17 Lower Whitney Road at 1:43 a.m. on Sunday.

It was a location with which they were all too familiar.

The multi-family home was torched, with heavy smoke pouring out of it.

The Ludlow Fire Department told CBS 3 that they did not have control of the blaze until a little after 3 a.m.

Mutual aid was needed from the Springfield, Chicopee, Three Rivers and Palmer Fire Departments.

By early this afternoon, a demolition crew had already been to the site to tear down the remains.

Officials consider this to be a suspicious fire.

They said the building was abandoned and already in the process of being torn down. Also, with it being empty, there was no source of power to the building.

The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating.

The reason the six-family home was abandoned was due to a fire at the building back in February 2012.

At the time, all six families got out of the fire okay.

According to the Ludlow Fire Department, that turned out to be an electrical fire that started in the basement.

Officials said there is no recent history of arson in the town.

There were a string of dumpster fires not too long ago, but they said nothing to the level of what was seen early Sunday morning.
