Special committee to determine if Castro should face death penalty
The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Internal Review Committee will meet Thursday afternoon to decide if Ariel Castro should be recommended for the death penalty.
The committee will present pros and cons about Castro's case before Prosecutor Timothy McGinty makes the final decision whether Castro will face the death penalty. Under consideration - how strong is the case, will it stand up on appeal and do the victims want the death penalty. Castro is facing nearly 330 charges, including murder.
19 Action News has learned no special announcement will be made after Prosecutor McGinty renders his decision. Whether Castro faces the death penalty will be announced when the new set of charges are produced against him.
Castro is accused of holding Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus captive in his west side Cleveland house for years before they were rescued on May 6.
Berry gave birth to his daughter while in captivity.
Castro remains jailed on $8M bond. His trial is slated for August.
