Silent Witness hopes someone will recognize a suspect depicted in a composite drawing who ambushed and shot to death a Maricopa County sheriff's detention officer on Aug. 8.
It was right around 4 a.m. that gunfire rang out near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. MCSO Detention Officer Jorge Vargas was shot and killed in his driveway as he was getting ready to leave for work.
His family and the community continue to mourn his loss. The sting is still very real, especially since Vargas' killer remains on the loose.
"George, he was how everybody described him," said his brother, Irvine Vargas. "Just a role model to everybody else. Even his cousins who were older than him looked up to him."
The suspect is described as Hispanic and in his 20s. He is between 5'7" to 5'8" tall and weighs between 155 to 160 pounds. he has black hair and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.
"He was the glue that helped keep the whole family together," said Irvine Vargas.
Silent Witness is making sure the composite sketch is blasted all over the community with four billboards throughout the Valley.
There is a reward being offered in this case.
