Man dies while in Mesa jail cell

A 51-year-old transient died of unknown causes while sitting in the Mesa Police Department Holding Facility early Tuesday morning.

The unidentified man was jailed on an arrest warrant and appeared to be intoxicated when he was admitted to the facility at 130 N. Robson, according to a Mesa Police Department report.

A detention officer making his rounds found the man's body on a cell bunk about 2:20 a.m., according to the report.

He was pronounced dead in his cell.

His identity was being withheld until his family could be notified.

An investigation was being conducted by Mesa police detectives, according to the report.

No other information was immediately available.
