Sen. Ed Markey tours Western Mass, talks Syria

Posted: Updated:

Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey was back in Western Mass Tuesday afternoon.

He met with local mayors, business leaders and voters from four towns across the region.

Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonette gave Markey a tour of the River Mill Senior Center Brownfield Redevelopment site.

Senator Markey said he's meeting with several Western Mass mayors to find out what they need from the federal government to better their cities.

"My goal is to talk to the mayors and learn what it is that they want to have done with their cities. Then help them in bringing in federal resources that could help them make their cities better in the 21st century than they were in the 20th century."

Senator Markey then got a tour of Union Station in Springfield by Mayor Domenic Sarno.

The senator said projects like Union Station are not only vital to Western Mass, but also to the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

"Everyone in the state will think of this as a destination, so the mayor and representative have a vision of what this could represent in the future," said Markey.

"As he indicates now, it becomes not only a transportation hub but an economic catalyst. North south is going to continue to happen, now we have to work on east and west, which is key," said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Markey did not shy away from speaking about national issues, including the crisis in Syria.

Markey said Syrian President Bashar Assad had violated international law by using chemical weapons. He also said it's appropriate for the U.S. to take action.

"I think it's totally appropriate for the president, in conjunction with our allies, to make a strike into Syria, that says to them 'Stop using chemical weapons,'" said Markey.

Markey then continued to say the U.S. should not get in the middle of Syria's Civil War, but send the message that chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

"If they do not respond, then we hit them again," said Markey.
