A first ever summer basketball league in the city's South End wrapped up Saturday afternoon, with plenty of people on hand for the championship game at James Jackson Court.
The league was run by the South Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative.
Organizers said the league was designed not only for recreation, but also for drug prevention and education.
They believe the players on the court today will be the leaders of the city tomorrow.
"One of the biggest things in building a community is reaching the next generation of youth," said Ed Caisse of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department. "We're trying to reach them and encourage them to stay in school. We want them not getting involved in any criminal activity at all."
Following Saturday's championship game, there was a trophy presentation and refreshments for everyone in attendance.
