Woman shot while sitting in her Springfield home

Posted: Updated:

A woman was sitting in her home around 2 a.m. Saturday when police say a shot was fired from outside of the building, piercing the wall and hit the woman in the buttocks.

The incident happened at the Spring Meadow apartment complex on Canon Circle.

Neighbors said the woman was back home late Saturday morning, after being treated for the gun shot wound. They said she was shaken up because of the incident, as were her two young children who live with her.

A neighbor told CBS 3 that while he feels relatively safe in the complex, he believes this kind of violence needs to stop.

"It's the guns and the people's mentality unfortunately," said Charles Vereen. "We really have to start doing something to stop this, because it's not just here. It's all over. Especially, if you have a lot of kids out here. They could have been an innocent bystander and it could have been a fatality."

CBS 3 media partner Mass Live and The Republican reported that a .40 caliber casing was found outside of the apartment.

No arrests have been made, and the incident remains under investigation.
