New Haven shooting injures two

Posted: Updated:

Police in New Haven are investigating a shooting following a "hip-hop" party in the entertainment district.

Police told Eyewitness News, during closing time Friday night, a large fight broke out in the courtyard of Pulse Nightclub on Chapel Street.

When officers arrived, many in the crowd scattered.

A large crowd gathered in front of the Omni Hotel where a second fight broke out.

Officers were in the processes of arresting some of the unruly club-goers when gunfire rang out on the corner of Church and Crown Streets in front of Gateway College.

Hamden resident, 24-year-old Timothy Charles and New Haven resident, 21-year-old, Kirt Swan were both shot.

Both victims ran across the street to a group of club security associates working at Empire Nightclub.

Charles and Swan were transported to the hospital for treatment, and injuries are not life-threatening.

Prior to the shooting, both victims were patrons at Pulse Nightclub.

After further investigation, police determined both victims were involved in altercation involving at least a dozen people on the corner of Crown and Temple Street.

Police determined a fourth altercation between a group of people also occurred down the street, which the gunshot wound victims denied any involvement in.

Officer David Hartman of the New Haven police department calls these shootings an "inexcusable occurrence".

Police in the area have had trouble lately with venues that promote "Hip-Hop" events.

During the month of August, a fight broke out at The Lazy Lizard on Crown Street following closing time in which a patron punched a police officer.

The following evening a club patron was shot and killed while exiting The Cheetah Club on East Street.

Police are continuing to investigate these crimes.

Anyone with information or who was a witness to the shootings or the fights that lead up to them, are urged to contact police at 203-946-6034.
