UMass Amherst hosts statewide conference

Posted: Updated:

Officials from colleges all around the commonwealth came to UMass Amherst Wednesday to address sexual and domestic violence issues.

Around 100 came out for the forum entitled Massachusetts Steps Up: Key Sexual and Domestic Violence Issues for College Administrators.

The goal of the program is to talk about best practices and to educate college administrators how to best respond when sexual assault does occur.

The hope is that by bringing people from schools around the state together administrators will gain more tools and ideas to better handle the issue.

"By the time women are seniors in college 25 percent of those women will have experienced either an attempted sexual assault or a completed sexual assault so it is a really significant problem," said Becky Lockwood, associate director of counseling and rape crisis services at the Center for Women and Community.

Among the specific topics discussed were alcohol, sexual consent and accountability.
